Heavy metal monitoring in ivanovo region: different methods and international cooperation

An increase of anthropogenic stress causes a degradation of environmental quality. Heavy metals (HM) are the most dangerous pollutants. They are present in all natural environmental places and frequently they have a tendency for bioaccumulation. A toxicity and high level of their action define the urgency of the research of heavy metals migration and transformation in natural ecosystems. It is the aim of the present work.

The object of the investigation is Ivanovo region, which is situated at the interfluve of the Volga and Klyazma rivers and has an area of 22 thousand sq. km. There are 45 squares which are separated from the region with an average area of 400 sq. km. Each square has sampled soil, needle of spruce (Picea Abies), mosses and snow. The samples from the water of the main rivers have been sampled as well.

The analysis of HM content (Pb, Cd, Cr, Cu, Co, Ni, Mn, Fe and Zn) has been carried out by means of atomic absorption spectrometry.
Up to now the results of analysing soil and needles have been processed completely. The concentrations of gross and movable form of the metals were determined in soil. From the data of the analysis the maps of spatial HM distribution in the environments examined have been created. HM content in the soil samples is within the range of maximum permissible concentration. However increasing HM content in the soil near large industrial centers is an evidence of their anthropogenic origin.

The factor analysis of the given data also confirmed the anthropogenic character of areas with higher HM content.
Further we are planning to compare the results of the analysis of HM concentration in all the environments. This fact allows to judge of HM deposition values in air, water and soil. The reliability of the results will be checked by the parallel measurements using fluorescence spectrometry. Besides, the samples will be measured by the neutron activation analysis on the basis of the Laboratory of neutron physics of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research. It allows to extend considerably the number of the observed elements. The results of the research will be included into the European Atlas of HM deposition according to the Long range transboundary air pollution programme.

The results of the research will be given to the ecological council for developming of measures for Ivanovo region, which is target at the maintenance of a favorable quality of environment.
Similar research can be continued during the next two years and it will allow to define spatial and temporal trends of HM distribution in natural environments and determine the regularity of their behavior in the environment.
